Remember: the point of the research proposal is to provide an overview of the topic and to suggest a research question. The proposal is open ended-you do not need a thesis or to answer the research question. You must provide background or context for the topic and describe the major arguments over the topic. You must refer to (and properly cite) sources to show the extent of your research and your knowledge of the topic. The research question should not be one that can be simply answered by “yes” or “no,” or that simply asks for information. Rather, the research question should lead to a thesis—an informed opinion on the topic.
The following worksheet is to be completed in groups. Work on one essay at a time. Each student must distribute a copy of his or her essay to the members of the group. As students read the essay, they should make corrections, comments and suggestions where necessary. When everyone has finished reading the essay, the group as a whole must complete this worksheet. Discuss each item carefully, referring to the student’s essay and to the source essays where appropriate. The author of the essay must fill out this sheet based on the group discussion. Each student must hand in this sheet with the final essay and one copy of the earlier draft.
